   By the 1920s, indentured (penal-contract) labour in Assam's tea gardens rested on the Workmen's Breach of Contract Act, 1859, which made breaking a labour contract a criminal offence. Its repeal took effect in 1926 (from 1 April 1926), ending the indenture system there.
