   On 30 June 1857 Sir Henry Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of Awadh, marched out of Lucknow against the rebels and was defeated at Chinhat; he fell back to the Lucknow Residency, where he was mortally wounded during the siege and died on 4 July 1857.
