   The Portuguese traveller Duarte Barbosa, who described the Vijayanagara kingdom and the west coast in the early 16th century, recorded the use of the seed drill on the Karnataka coast, which historians treat as the earliest reference to the device in India. Conti (c. 1420), Abdur Razzaq (1440s) and Nikitin (c. 1470) also visited India but are not credited with this reference.
