Black tigers have broad, merged dark stripes caused by a single mutation in the Taqpep gene; strictly they are pseudo-melanistic, but they are popularly called melanistic tigers. Today wild black tigers are known only from Similipal Tiger Reserve, Odisha, and the captive-born ones at Nandankanan (Bhubaneswar) and Chennai zoos share ancestry with Similipal tigers, so both statements are correct.
