UPSC CAPF AC 2024 Paper 1 · Question 29
Question 29 of the UPSC CAPF (AC) 2024 Paper I (4 August 2024). Try it first, then open the answer and explanation.
In an ecosystem why is the number of trophic levels of a food chain usually limited?
- Lower trophic level has lesser energy than the higher trophic level
- Because of the loss of energy at each trophic level
- Higher trophic level individual can control the lower ones more efficiently
- Limited trophic level makes a food chain less vulnerable to parasites

Answer: (2) Because of the loss of energy at each trophic level
Only about 10% of the energy at one trophic level passes to the next (Lindeman's ten per cent law); the rest is lost, mostly as heat in respiration, so after four or five levels too little energy is left to support another level. Option (a) is reversed: lower trophic levels hold more energy, not less.
