   Mendel worked out the laws of inheritance from hybridisation experiments on the garden pea (Pisum sativum), which has clear contrasting traits, a short life cycle and self-pollinating flowers. The four o'clock plant was later used by Correns to show incomplete dominance, and the fruit fly by T. H. Morgan to study linkage.
