UPSC CAPF (AC) 2024 Paper I · Question 13
Question 13 of the UPSC CAPF (AC) 2024 Paper I (4 August 2024). Try it first, then open the answer and explanation.
Water is a good solvent for dissolving ionic compounds because
- It has a high specific heat
- It has no colour
- It has a high dipole moment
- It has a high boiling point
Show answer
Answer: (3) It has a high dipole moment
A water molecule is bent and strongly polar (dipole moment about 1.85 D), so its partially negative oxygen end attracts cations and its partially positive hydrogen ends attract anions, pulling ions out of the crystal and surrounding them (hydration). This polarity also gives water a very high dielectric constant that weakens the attraction between ions; specific heat, colour and boiling point do not explain its dissolving power.
