UPSC CAPF AC 2024 Paper 1 · Question 11
Question 11 of the UPSC CAPF (AC) 2024 Paper I (4 August 2024). Try it first, then open the answer and explanation.
Which one among the following statements about matter is NOT correct?
- On increasing the temperature of solids, the kinetic energy of particles increases
- The maximum temperature at which a solid melts to become a liquid at atmospheric pressure is called its melting point
- Particles of steam have more energy than water at 100°C
- Direct change of gas to solid is called deposition

Answer: (2) The maximum temperature at which a solid melts to become a liquid at atmospheric pressure is called its melting point
The melting point is the minimum (fixed) temperature at which a solid melts to become a liquid at atmospheric pressure, not the "maximum" temperature, so (b) is the incorrect statement. The others are correct: heating raises the kinetic energy of particles, steam at 100°C holds extra energy equal to the latent heat of vaporisation compared with water at 100°C, and a direct gas-to-solid change is called deposition.
