Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, refused to appoint a Deputy Chief Minister in 1956 and dismissed the post as a 'sixth finger', meaning it was unnecessary; K. V. Ranga Reddy became Deputy Chief Minister only in 1959.
