Assertion (A): Balban could not raise the numerical strength of the army to the level which it reached later at the time of Allauddin Khilji. Reason (R): Balban insisted upon high birth as an essential qualification for appointment to higher civil and military posts. Choose the correct option from the following:

Balban reorganised the army, but it never reached the very large standing army that Alauddin Khilji later kept and paid in cash, so (A) is true. Balban also gave high offices only to men of noble Turkish birth, so (R) is true. However, his insistence on high birth was a policy about who could hold office, not the reason his army stayed smaller, so (R) does not explain (A).
