The first Indian universities, at Calcutta, Bombay and Madras, were set up in 1857 under Lord Canning, long after Bentinck. The abolition of Sati (1829), the suppression of female infanticide and the Mahalwari settlement of the North-Western Provinces (Regulation IX of 1833) all belong to Bentinck's time.
