   If we listed all numbers from 100 to 10,000, how many times would the digit 5 be printed ?

   From 0 to 9999 each of the four digit places shows 5 exactly 1000 times, giving 4000. Numbers 0 to 99 contain 20 fives (10 in the units place, 10 in the tens place) and 10,000 has none, so the count is 4000 − 20 = 3980.
